Obituary

Dr. Helen L. Greenwood, 85, died Saturday, January 9, 2021 in Oak Hill, West Virginia. She moved to Oak Hill from Sebastian, Florida in May 2004. Previously, she lived in Yarmouth, Maine for 27 years. She was the daughter of Frederic and Doris Greenwood, both deceased, of Athol, Massachusetts. Dr. Greenwood was born in Gardner, MA, grew up in Athol and graduated from Athol High School in 1953. She earned a B.A. degree in Biology from Northeastern University, M.S. in Zoology from the University of New Hampshire, and a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Connecticut. Helen was a faculty member for 27 years at the University of Southern Maine, Portland, Maine where she was also Provost. Later, she was Dean of Lewiston-Auburn College, a new college of the University of Southern Main. There she was a member of many boards and committees. She retired in 1996. Prior to the University of Southern Maine, Dr. Greenwood taught at the University of Massachusetts, at Worcester, MA and at Medway High School in Medway, MA. After retirement, Helen did volunteer teaching in adult literacy in Florida, Fayette County, WV, and in science at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic School in Oak Hill.

Dr. Greenwood was an enthusiastic builder of doll houses and collector of miniatures, was an avid reader, gardener, and bird watcher. She was a certified Master Gardener, loved cats, and was a strong supporter of natural history, clean environment, and science education. She was a longtime member of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Dr. Greenwood was preceded in death by beloved brother, Douglas, who passed away in 2009, leaving his wife, Carolyn Greenwood of Oak Hill.
In addition to her sister-in-law she leaves behind a nephew Brian Greenwood and niece Tina Angelichio of West Virginia; a niece Nancy Greenwood Connerant and nephew Edwin Bryan Connerat, III of Georgia; a niece Dr. Jackie Greenwood King and nephew Bernard King of Florida, and niece Jennifer Greenwood Dermody and nephew Timothy Dermody of South Carolina; niece Abigail Ward of West Virginia; great niece McCayla Eddy and great nephew Mark Eddy of Kansas, great nephews Logan Connerant, Thomas and Benjamin King; great nieces Cassidy and Jessica Greenwood, Catherine Connerat; great great nephew Landyn Eddy and many cousins and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in her memory be made to SS. Peter and Paul Catholic School, for science equipment, Oak Hill, West Virginia, to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104, or to St. Joseph Indian School, Box 300, Chamberlain, South Dakota, 57325-0300.
