William Gary Smith Sr., 77, passed away Monday, October 3, 2022, peacefully at home with his loving wife by his side. Gary was an avid WVU Mountaineer fan as well as a lifelong Fayetteville Pirate fan. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Gary was well known throughout the community for his many years of working at Montgomery Ward. He never met a stranger and was always happy to talk sports, WVU or Fayetteville Pirates. After retirement, his passions were his amazing gardens, his grandchildren, and his great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Leapha Smith, brothers Jimmy Don, Bob and Junior and grandchild Slayton.

He is survived by his adoring wife of 38 years Susan; his grandchildren Noah, Shaunna, Lindsey, Wyatt, Zach, Josh and Kaden; great grandchildren Rylann, Alaynna, Leon, Drake and Treyson, and his children Debbie and William Jr.; sisters Connie, Jackie and Norma Jean and a host of nieces and nephews.

Before the COVID pandemic, Gary could always be found on Friday nights cheering on his beloved Fayetteville Pirates and on Monday mornings having coffee with his many friends discussing the weekend’s sports. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him. Per Gary’s request, there will be no service and his body will be cremated.
