Obituary for Janice Lou "Jenny" Adkins

Janice Lou “Jenny” Adkins, 79, of Gatewood, WV, went to her heavenly home on Friday, February 24, 2023.
The Bible tells us that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. We know our sweet and precious momma is singing and dancing with the angels and praising our Lord and Savior Jesus.
Jenny was born at Prince on the New River to Carl O’Neal and Blanche Skaggs O’Neal on January 1, 1944. She loved growing up in the Prince and McKendree area with her parents, brothers, and sisters. She told many stories of their childhood on the river.
She met the love of her life Leon Adkins in 1962 and they were married later that year. They went on to share 59 years together through easy times and hard times, being blessed with four children. Benny, Brenda, Joey, and Susan. She was office manager and bookkeeper for the family business Adkins and Sons Concrete, taking care of all the details of the everyday operations, as well as taking care of her home and family. Jenny worked hard her whole life, and never asked for anything, except that her family was happy and healthy. She loved her church and church family, who helped her through some rough times.
Her Christian faith never wavered, and she looked forward to seeing Jesus and her family and friends who had gone on before her. She was wholly and completely devoted to God and her family. They always knew that mom or Nana, as the grandkids called her, would always be there with a kiss and a hug, or to discuss a serious life problem. She would listen and help you understand the best answer because she could see right through to the heart of the matter.
Jenny had a lifelong love affair with music, always singing or humming a tune. She had a beautiful singing voice and often sang, by request, at church. She was a gifted writer of songs, poems, and short stories about life, love, family, and growing up on the river.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband French Leon Adkins, son Joey Adkins, parents Carl and Blanche O’Neal, brothers Carlos O’Neal, Bill O’Neal, Jimmy O’Neal, and Dan O’Neal, sisters Wanda Jean O’Neal and Barbara Ames.
Left behind to keep her memory in their hearts are Benny (Tami) Adkins of Fayetteville, Brenda (Roy) Payne of Oak Hill, Susan (Trevor) Schmitt of Concord, NC, grandkids Benjamin, Luke, Samuel, Abbey, Hank, and Peyton, special sister Betty Gillian, special brother-in-law Walter Adkins. She will be missed greatly by many special nieces and nephews, special friends Dennis and Nancy Compton, and many other people whose lives were touched by this wonderful lady.
The family would like to send a special heartfelt thank you to the Wolf Creek Community Church, Pastor Scott (Sabrina) Farnsworth, and everyone for their overwhelming support during this time of trial.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at High Lawn Funeral Home with Brother Scott Farnsworth and Brother Ronnie Hall officiating.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at the funeral home prior to the service.
High Lawn Funeral Home is assisting the family.
