Obituary for Gilmer Wayne Thurbon

Gilmer Wayne Thurbon, 86 of Parkersburg, WV (formerly of Beckley) passed away, Friday, February 26, 2021 at Cedar Grove Nursing Home in Parkersburg, WV. Gilmer was born on March 24, 1933 in Slab Fork, WV to George William and Cora Cobb Thurbon. Gilmer was a truck driver at Raleigh Ready Mix Company in Beckley, WV and a member of Crab Orchard Baptist Church in Crab Orchard, WV. He was a Private First Class in the United States Army serving in Fort Carson, Colorado. In addition to his parents Gilmer is preceded in death by his half-brother Woody Johnson; sisters Georgia Overby and Almeta Collins; brothers Bill Thurbon and Franklin Thurbon; brother in Laws Don Carpenter, Marshall Collins and Jim Overby and his special friend Shirley Mitchem. Those left to cherish his memory include his sister Pat Carpenter; several nieces and nephews: George and Debby Overby, Mike and Ruth Ann Lynch, Jim and Beverly Overby, William and Virginia Collins, Scott and Jan Collins, Sherry Peed, Greg and Julia Carpenter, David and Brenda Carpenter, Kim and Scott Evans, Linda Brookshire, Teresa Carpenter and James and their families. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill, WV with Pastor Greg Swisher officiating. At the family’s request donations may be made to Cedar Grove Nursing Home in Parkersburg, WV.
